29 SHAH ALAM: Placing abate into drains to kill mosquito breeding grounds, clearing fallen leaves as well as cleaning the surroundings of the printing plant were the activities 15 pupils of Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Jelutong (SKBJ) Dengue Patrol team carried out during a mini gotong royong at Balai Berita Shah Alam today. Accompanied by eight teachers, the SKBJ Dengue Patrol team's visit to Balai Berita Shah Alam was its seventh stop out of about 13 premises to spread awareness on dengue and the importance of fighting the disease. In their two-hour visit, the team, made up of Year 3 to Year 5 pupils, attentively checked and eliminated potential breeding grounds. At the end of their gotong royong, they were happy to report that they did not find any potential mosquito breeding grounds within the premises. SKBJ Dengue Patrol team community service head Zaidin Seni, who is also the school's teacher, said Dengue Patrol is a national-level competition co-organised by French company Sanofi Pasteur with the Health and Education ministries. Zaidin said SKBJ, along with eight other schools, were chosen to represent Selangor in the competition that started in June and will end Sept 2. All dengue eradication and awareness activities carried out by the respective schools are judged by the number of likes, shares and comments on their social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Tumblr and Twitter. "So far, the SKBJ Dengue Patrol team has carried out similar activities in a kindergarten, surau, an orphanage, the Subang Royal Malaysian Air Force Base as well as in our school itself where a ‘gotong royong perdana’ was held with non-governmental organisations, the Fire and Rescue Department, police as well as Shah Alam City Council. "Our next destinations include a local farmer's market, Aeon Mall Shah Alam, Tengku Ampuan Jemaah mosque in Bukit Jelutong as well as the Management and Science University," said Zaidin. Zaidin said only part of the 50-member SKBJ Dengue Patrol Team were able to make it for the visit to Balai Berita Shah Alam. He said all 50 members are part of the school's Young Doctor's Club (Kelab Doktor Muda) who were picked to be in the team. "These pupils are aware of the basics of health matters so having them in Dengue Patrol team complements what they have learnt in the Young Doctor's Club. "Most importantly, they are able to share the knowledge they have gained by being in the Dengue Patrol team with their friends and families and also carry out a 10-minute anti-dengue checks at home," added Zaidin. Before the start of the gotong royong, the pupils, along with their teachers, were given a tour of the printing plant by Balai Berita Shah Alam head Faizulddin Manshor and Balai Berita Shah Alam research and development assistant manager Md Jefri Mohd Nor. A member of SKBJ Dengue Patrol team, Year 5 pupil Abang Aliff Abang Ahmad, said he enjoyed the gotong royong as well as the tour of the printing plant. "It was fun seeing how newspapers are put together and printed. My ambition is to be a writer and this experience has given me an insight into the world of journalism," he said.
